The World Cup was deeply disappointing tournament for the reigning world champions. Drawn into Group F with Paraguay, New Zealand, and Slovakia, the Azzurri failed to win a single match and finished last in their group, becoming only the fourth title holder in history to be eliminated in the first round.

Italy draw 1–1 with both Paraguay and New Zealand. Pirlo made his return as a second-half substitute in the final group match against Slovakia, but despite his efforts, Italy lost 3–2 in a chaotic and frantic game that sealed their elimination.

The tournament marked the end of an era for several veterans from the 2006 squad, including Fabio Cannavaro and Gennaro Gattuso, and led to Marcello Lippi’s departure as head coach. Though Pirlo’s impact was limited, his brief appearance highlighted the lack of imagination in Italy’s midfield without him — a shortfall that would be dramatically corrected two years later at Euro 2012.
